Although we supposedly live in a constantly changing and fluid environment where nothing seemingly remains static for too long – it’s somehow surprising that language, culture, spaces and territories can still be placed within clearly defined markers and firmly rooted to existing perceptions.

When I was young, my parents would share stories with my siblings and me, of people like themselves who crossed divides leaving behind a little of their previous identity and accepting elements of a new one.

Surfaces have always been important points of confluence where perception and the obscured reality are tied together. It is in trying to grasp and understand these two states and how they could either be the creators of potential (im)balance, tension or a new hybrid that fascinates me.

I find myself constantly drawn to ideas or spaces which fall within 'clearly' defined, restrictive and accepted marks – a line, boundary points or surfaces. These become the starting points for my work, an opportunity to explore beyond the surface, imagining that some surfaces are chimera-like thus having a character which is in flux, erasing any previously known understanding we may have held. It is only through such a process, where we can examine our own perception can an understanding of the relationship between the visible and the hidden be exposed and examined.
